SENIORS ADOPTING SENIORS

Subject(s): Lifestyle

In this month, where we as a nation take time to gather and give thanks, we pet parents know all too well the blessings our pets provide for us all year round.

Besides Thanksgiving, November is also ‘Adopt a Senior Pet’ month. Senior pets need wonderful people who are caring and understand the limitations (and joys) old age can bring. Who better than someone who is in their golden years themselves!

We all know that dogs offer us unconditional love and companionship. These happy friendships bring health benefits to our lives. A dog can also provide the means for seniors to get more active by promoting physical exercise. Even just going for a walk, any physical activity can also provide comradery, thus improving overall health.

There are many local programs that advocate this concept.  For example, in Washington State, visit www.paws.org. In northern California, check out www.muttville.org. Both of these organizations have programs specifically for matching senior citizens with a senior pet.

If you cannot make a full-time commitment to adopting a senior dog, there are other ways you can help older dogs:  You can volunteer time at a local shelter or pet adoption events in your area. Another option is to foster a senior dog – this way, it is not a permanent commitment, but you will be providing a temporary, loving home for an older dog who needs one.

An alternative way to help senior dogs is to donate to your local shelter or a non-profit organization such as  www.greymuzzle.org. Grey Muzzle provides grants nationwide to fellow non-profits with a focus on rescuing senior pets, especially those at-risk.

All of us at D.O.G. love dogs and want to see every one of them (regardless of age) live happy and healthy lives. This month, we are thankful for you – our pet parents – and your beloved four-legged family members who are partnering with us to bring great nutrition to pets throughout the country.  Happy Thanksgiving!
