What can you say about a man who is devoted to his community, his customers, and all species of animals? Perhaps he might be Camarillo’s resident Dr. Doolittle! Chris Hoeflich seamlessly cannot only communicate with a variety of animals but has an instinct to help pet parents find exactly what they need.
Chris’s story starts as being a correctional officer in Florida, a job which brought little joy and he knew he needed a change. His brother who lived in California, offered him a job at his pet store in Fountain Valley. Chris packed his bags, headed for the west coast, and learned the pet business from the ground up – literally sweeping floors, unloading pet food, and learning the business until he worked his way up and managed the store. While in Orange County, he met and married Kathi Toaso who is his partner in life and business.
In 1997, Chris and Kathi had an opportunity to buy an established pet store in Santa Clarita. They packed up their family and moved seventy miles northeast and established Pet Supply Santa Clarita which they own to this day. About two years ago, they opened a second store in Camarillo.
Chris believes, “Camarillo is special because people are proud of their community.” The store is located in a family-owned shopping center. He states, “all of us shop owners support each other.” Chris is terrific with his customers, often breaking the ice with a pet trivia question or riddle. “I am a strong believer in having a fun atmosphere for everyone who works here as well as for my customers,” said Chris.
Chris chose to carry D.O.G. products because he appreciated the food being farm-raised and of great quality. It was also important to him to stock a brand that is locally owned, and Chris appreciates the ongoing support he receives from the company.
Chris and Kathi have quite the menagerie: Two horses – named Darla and Flashlight, a puppy named Zsa Zsa Gabor, a 16-year-old Chihuahua named Dino, three cats, and three tortoises. These pets do not include the Congo African grey parrot named Marta, and Ozzie (a Malukan cockatoo) who are both over 20 years old and serve as the official greeters at the store. As you can see, the Dr. Doolittle reference was no exaggeration!
